Week 1

Motion Graphics
Motion graphics = graphics in motion
Motion graphics = composition + animation
Composition = graphics + typography
Animation = movement + Rhythm
  • Step 1: Write a Script That Tells a Story.
  • Step 2: Storyboard While You Brainstorm the Visual Treatment.
  • Step 3: Take Your Storyboards into Design.
  • Step 4: Animate the Final Designs.

Week 4

Vector/ Character Animation
  • Create graphics in AI
  • Select layers that intend to animate
  • Place them on separate layers

Exercise 1 - Dynamic typography

This exercise will create a dynamic typesetting music video as a group. So my group decided to use Taylor Swift “ song "Look What You Made Me Do". Later, we divided the lyrics into seven parts and discussed fonts and color schemes.

Fonts & color

Our group discussed the colors and fonts to choose, and finally voted to decide on the final solution

We picked 5 fonts to choose from

First-group Kinetic Typography exercise

We approached Mr. Martin for feedback and said it was a great job and we could submit it. But we got a score of 9/10, and our group wanted to get a perfect score. We started talking about analyzing which part was not done well and doing it more perfectly.

Our group decided to make some modifications and improvements to our video. Therefore, we decided to spend another 2-3 days doing this exercise to make our music video more consistent and accurate with the rhythm and lyrics.

I made some color changes and added some font animations to make the picture richer.

Motion Graphic Chart Practice Progress

We need to watch a pre-recorded video to learn how to animate a chart in Adobe After Effect

My task was to create the C: Bar Chart

Exercise 3 - Vector Animation

We learned how to organize layers in Adobe Illustrator and bring them into After Effects for vector animation. This is a relatively simple process because the animation occupies only a few keyframes in the rotation, position, scale, and opacity properties. We also learned to use a swing expression that randomly generates motion within specified parameters. We also learned how to create bouncing effects for more interesting animations, as well as more complex animations using the Puppet Pin tool

Reflection

I find motion graphics to be a very interesting topic to learn and explore. There are thousands of animation possibilities that require constant practice to get smooth transitions and effects. It's fun and encourages more interaction with the audience. I realized that planning was crucial before I started animating to see the bigger picture and visualize how each scene was connected, which affected the cohesion of the story. Motion graphics can also allow you to better engage your audience, increasing interactivity and engagement.

In conclusion, making motion graphics is a very interesting and challenging task that requires constant learning and exploration. Looking forward to exploring more effects and techniques in After Effects~
