INSTRUCTIONS

Task 1: Project proposal

Week 1 - Week 3 / 10 January 2023 - 25 January 2023

The first meeting with my group began right after the first lecture in our cross-cultural design class, and we immediately started brainstorming some potential topics that we might be considering doing. At least as far as I know, some of the topics considered are listed below.

  • Plastic surgery culture
  • Chopstick culture
  • Skateboarding culture
  • Sneaker culture
  • Hip-hop music culture
Most of our votes went to "sneaker culture," but our instructor was quick to dismiss the idea, saying that, while not incorrect, we needed to narrow down the specific visual culture or phenomenon that emerged in sneaker culture. We were then advised to change the subject and conduct further research.

Since I only know a little about sneaker culture, during the initial research, I was responsible for the preparation of other team members, as well as the sketching part and writing part of the PPT.
Actually, I'm worried about our topic, but anyway, we need to listen to the instructor's feedback first.

We were a bit off-topic about sneaker culture, and Mr. Razali suggested that we change the theme or find some elements about sneakers, so we decided to change the article after the group discussion after the debriefing and change it to a topic about traditional Chinese tea culture. This is a more accessible topic for us because we have members from China.

I am mainly responsible for the illustration part of this tea culture theme, and since I am good at drawing, I am responsible for the drawing and design content behind the group work.

Task 2: Data collection
Week 4 - Week 6 / 1 February 2023 - 17 February 2023

As for our data collection, we started creating an Instagram account to easily reach our target audience, the younger generation. Convey some basic information about Chinese tea culture to the public. In addition to this, a Google Forms survey was conducted during this period so that we could understand people's love or concern about Chinese tea. We got many responses from them.

I created a link to the Google questionnaire and completed it with Ong Soo Chien.

I learned a lot of new things from the second project. I learned that there are many ways to collect data information, and I learned how to communicate with respondents to many surveys.

Task 3: Final project

February 15, 2023 - February 28, 2023 / Week 6 - Week 8

From the three preliminary ideas we made in the proposal, we decided to choose the idea of an "electronic guide" as a medium to convey our message about Chinese tea culture.

We had a division of labor discussion. Danish, Ziyi, and Shiyan were responsible for the final poster content, and Wei Jie, Ong Soo Chien, and I were responsible for the e-book and product design.

To let people know more about Chinese tea culture and have a healthier life, we have included the types of Chinese tea, showing the correct way to brew tea, the types of tea and the benefits of drinking tea, and so on.

Group Report: Intercultural Design Course Reflection Summary

Introduce

In the cross-cultural design course, our group chose Chinese tea culture as the theme of the speech and showed the audience the breadth and unique charm of Chinese tea culture by introducing the history, varieties, production methods, and cultural meanings of tea culture. After the presentation, we received feedback and comments from Ms. Anis and Mr. Razali, which were very helpful for our learning and growth.

Difficulties and challenges

While preparing for the presentation, we encountered some difficulties and challenges. First of all, due to the different cultural backgrounds and language levels of our group members, we need to spend some time understanding and communicating each other's ideas and opinions. Secondly, since Chinese tea culture is pervasive and complex, we need to pick out the most representative and attractive content to present to the audience. Finally, during the presentation, we need to coordinate the time allocation and the order of the speeches to ensure that the whole speech is smooth and organized.

Performance and feedback.

During the presentation, our performance was recognized and praised by the teacher. We present the essence and connotation of Chinese tea culture through questionnaires, e-books, and other forms, and also actively answer questions raised by teachers and explain Chinese tea culture. The comments made by Ms. Anis and Mr. Razali were very instructive for us. They pointed out the strengths and weaknesses in our presentation, as well as some suggestions and directions for improvement.

Learn and apply

In this course, we learned a lot of knowledge and skills in cross-cultural design. For example, we learned how to understand and respect the differences and commonalities of different cultures, how to reach consensus and goals through effective communication and cooperation, and how to integrate multicultural elements and create value in design. This knowledge and skills will be very helpful for our future work and study. We can apply them to design, marketing, education, and other fields to contribute to cross-cultural exchange and understanding.

Conclusion

Overall, this cross-cultural design course presentation was a meaningful and rewarding learning experience. We have overcome difficulties and challenges to show the charm of Chinese tea culture. We learned a lot about Chinese culture and were able to discuss with Ms. Anis and Mr. Razali how to better convey our ideas. We hope to continue learning and participating in cross-cultural communication in the future.
